Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 2:46 PMI am reading "Seven types of Ambiguity" - so far it is really good...shows how ambiguous the truth is and shows one story of the effects of one incident on seven different lives and their interpretation of it....makes reality a little more ambiguous...a lot less static....Questionable if there is one TRUTH or a lot more gtey than we want to admit.
Very interesting! -

Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 2:59 PMLet's set up a book exchange on here.... it would eliminate the need to go to the library, and better yet, we don't have to pay for each book as we would have had to under other circumstances......

Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 1:37 PMLOVE this question!
here's a few I've had a joyous time reading while on public transportation.
"Last Night A DJ Saved My LIfe" it's very long and very dense. and, really who knew this DJ life stretched back into the 40's?
"180 days of Sodom" by the Marquis De Sade. I'd like to think I'm a fairly opened minded and progressive man, but this book made me blush everytime I cracked it open. Supposedly it's a satire of the French political system of that era. but oh my is it just plain dirty. and on those lines...
"Belle Du Jour" it's the book version of the authors blog, who is a high priced london call girl. She's got a fun voice and the situations she gets into is just insane. Who know a hooker can be so funny?
"Survivor" by Chuck Palaniuk. Yes, he's the guy who wrote Fight Club. and if you picked up "choke" and found yourself disappointed by it, you should read "survivor" It'll restore your faith in his work. one of the great american writers of our time.
"porno" by Irvine Welch. the follow up to "trainspotting." and it's just as nutty and crazy.
I'm wanting to pick up "the wears Prada." I'm kinda bummed that the movie came out before I could read it. -

Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Wed, June 7, 2006 - 1:17 PMI would do the book exchange...but most of my stuff is in storage right now.
I have really wanted to read "last night a DJ saved my life" for some time.

Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Thu, June 8, 2006 - 2:09 AMTo "Ego"=== did you read those while sitting or standing on public transportation?!
Thanks folks for your suggestions! I'm now wanting to read "last night a dj saved my life"....
Other worthwhile reads:
Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain
Smashed by Koren Zailckas
Thank You For Smoking by Christopher Buckley
and in case you can relate to it, Darkness Visible by William Styron.
OH my god, how stressful is waiting for the 27 Bryant at rush hour in pm at the Powell turnaround?! No buses and lots of characters! (thankfully it's getting lighter out these days and not pitch dark...) -

Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Thu, June 8, 2006 - 3:41 PMyep yep. although I got kinda embarrased when I was reading 180- days of sodom. thats just plain dirty. dirty dirty dirty.
Kitchen Confidential is a brilliant work. A bunch of DJ's I know have read that book. I think theres many similarities between professional chefs and Professional DJ's. Not that I'm very professional, but you get the idea. Anyway, anthony Bourdain's other novel, "a cooks tour" is a genuis work. You will appriciate your food after reading this. although he kinda disses SF, too much blow and too many holier then thou vegans. his words, not mine....
WOW. Books. kinda revolutionary, huh?

Re: great books to read while waiting for MUNI/BART
Thu, June 8, 2006 - 3:49 PMI've recently had that conversation with some people about the similarities between professional chefs and professional djs, and apparantly, in Toronto, there are many that are both. It doesn't seem to be the same way out here, which is surprising considering how much dj talent we have and how many great restaurants there are.
But, to take things even further, here's a guy who is both a chef and a dj, AT THE SAME TIME!!! Lame - yeah, cheesy - yeah. But, hell, I bet he scores big wit da wimmin.
