"When I first started DJ'ing, which was almost by accident, I couldn't mix to save my life but I discovered I had this amazing ability to throw songs together in a way that would affect some people really deeply. Now, I think it's probably due to my intense desire not just to provide rhythms for people to groove to, but also my want and need to add a lot of own feelings into the mix, i.e. my emotions, my moods, my desires, my hopes, fears and a whole lot of other stuff that just comes out of me when I play. It's not really a conscious action or reaction; it's more like a ritual I go through. In order to really connect with people I have to bare my soul. I have to break through my outer layers and get right down to the heart of things.

In many ways I'm getting naked up there behind the turntables. Not physically (which is probably a good thing!), but emotionally and that really provides something that other people can relate to. I play the best sets when I don't think about it, I just let go and you'd be amazed at how much more of an effect that can have on a crowd compared to even the best technique or showmanship.

Sometimes I get so into expressing myself I don't even look up to gauge people's reactions, as I can instead feel the connection deep inside, almost as though we were communicating on some other kind of plane. These can be very humbling and spiritual experiences for me and in some ways I feel like I become a channel for the people out there dancing or listening, for them to transcend this physical plane and find something more.

It's not always easy but I know when it does happen it's a real gift."
